Description: A robotic vehicle works for minimum wage. The vehicle is equipped with a ballpen and is able to draw random drawings. Visitors of the museum can let the robot draw for them. They have to bring a piece of paper and pay the minimumwage per hour. The vehicle’s movements are random. Therefore the visitors have to monitor the vehicle whilst working and take care that it does not leave the paper.
Every evening somebody of the staff of the museum has to recharge the batteries.
The generated income will be shared equally between the artist and the museum.

In Texas is $6.55 federal minimum wage used as reference. There are no actual amounts written in law.

Tangible Response is one of the UK’s most rewarding brand-responsive agencies. They allowed me to come to their office and use data from their local computer network for a representation of an average working day at Tangible Response. Thanks to Sarah B. who runs MEANTIME an art space in Cheltenham UK. She made it all possible.

The vehicle was placed on painted 5ft x 3ft board.

The computer grabs all available data from the local network, for example UDP packets which printers and file servers send when they are avilable or data from a local proxy server. This data is send to the vehicle. The vehicle uses the received data for a choreography of its movements. It is equipped with a spiky metal pin with which it is scratching the painted surface.

After 8 hours of work the drawing represents an average working day at the office of Tangible Response.

The drawing was sold to Tangible Response. I received £5.73 per hour, which is the minimum wage in the UK plus £75.00 material costs.

The data material ist the basis for the choreography of the vehicles. While the vehicles are moving they are scraching the surface with a spiky metal pin. Continuous scraching displays coloured layers. After some time a drawing will emerge as a mirror of the data traffic in the Internet.

statement of the jury awarding the project “Mur.knoten”, submitted by Karl Heinz Jeron from Berlin, with the appreciation prize:

the project with the 18 autonomously moving vehicles is a charming visualisation, that connects the transmission of netspecific data with creatures, that leave their traces in the real space, in a innovative manner. the carving in colourstrata during the movement is another interesting level, in which the traces of the movement are made visual.

the playful realisation has probably also got attraction to people afar from the net, that can appreciate networking/internet as a microcosmos.

Technische Beschreibung:

(x)=exp(cos(x))- 2*cos(4*x)+sin(x/12)**5
